Bowden notes that the Padres and Headley recently avoided arbitration on a one-year deal. Prior to that agreement, the sides were discussing an extension that would keep Headley in San Diego over the long haul. However, Headley later told reporters that he and the Padres were so far apart when it came to negotiations that it wasn't worth continuing discussions. With David Wright, Ryan Zimmerman and Evan Longoria already signed to long-term contract extensions, Headley is the best among third baseman who could be available, according to Bowden. The Padres received impact players Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal andEdinson Volquez in exchange for Latos. With top prospect Jedd Gyorko ready to take over at the hot corner, Bowden believes San Diego should deal Headley to increase their pool of young and talented players. Bowden lists the Cincinnati Reds, Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers as potential fits for Headley.
